“Een vak waar je oneindig veel voor terug krijgt.”

“Ik begon aan de opleiding met de ambitie om danskunstenaar te worden. Binnen de bacheloropleiding Docent Dans kun je veel kanten op. Tijdens de opleiding heb ik ontdekt dat ik niet alleen een passie voor dansen en choreograferen heb, maar merkte ik ook hoe leuk ik het lesgeven vond.

Het docentschap is misschien het hoofddoel, maar je wordt vrij gelaten om ook andere wegen te kiezen. Je leert ontzettend veel waardevolle inzichten over hoe je het beste uit alle leerlingen kunt halen. Ik kan nu voor alle leeftijden en doelgroepen geschikte danslessen maken en geven. Van 4 tot 100 jaar, van adhd tot dementie, in de opleiding komt het allemaal voorbij. Nadat ik heb lesgegeven loop ik altijd met een warme gloed terug naar huis. Het is een vak waar je oneindig veel voor terug krijgt.

Ik houd ervan om alle aspecten van een voorstelling goed te verzorgen en om daarvoor ook samen te werken met verschillende kunstenaars uit het vak, in dit geval kwamen zij uit de mode, beeldende kunst, muziek en grafische kunst.

Dat ik in mijn opleiding zoveel heb samengewerkt met mensen van andere disciplines komt deels voort uit mijn ervaring bij het Honours Programme. Dit is een tweejarige extra opleiding bovenop de bachelor als theoretische verdieping in de kunsten. Hier heb ik veel lezingen en discussies meegemaakt met hele diverse mensen uit andere vakgebieden, waardoor ik veel nieuwe perspectieven en inzichten heb leren kennen. Die verschillen samen te laten werken vind ik heel krachtig. Niet alleen in de theorie, maar vooral in de praktijk.

“I started the study programme with the ambition of becoming a dance artist. Within the Dance in Education Bachelor’s programme, there are a lot of various directions you can move in. During my study I discovered that I not only have a passion for dancing and choreographing, but I also felt how much I enjoyed the teaching.

Although teaching is the primary aim, there is a lot of freedom to also choose other paths. You gain a lot of valuable insights on how to get the best out of all your students. I am now able to create and deliver appropriate dance classes for all ages and target groups. From 4 to 100 years old, from adhd tot dementia, it’s all covered in the programme. After teaching a dance class, I walk home with a warm glow. It’s a profession which gives you infinitely more back in return.

I love to make sure all aspects of a performance are done properly and therefore to work with different artists from the relevant fields to achieve that – in this case they were from fashion, fine art, Music and graphic design.

The fact that I worked with so many people from other disciplines during my study is partly the result of my experience at the Honours Programme. This is a two-year additional course on top of the bachelor’s degree to give you an in-depht theoretical background in the arts. I got to attend a lot of lectures and discussions with various people from different fields, which gave me many new perspectives and insights. To be able to let these differences collaborate with each other is a very powerful thing. Not only theoretically, but especially practically.

Ja nee maar echt echt

Als je je vervreemd voelt van de wereld en je verbeeldingswereld meer je thuis is dan de fysieke wereld waarin je leeft, welke is dan echt?

“In mijn onderzoek ben ik op zoek gegaan naar hoe je verbeelding fysiek kunt vormgeven in dans. Hiervoor heb ik een lessenreeks gemaakt waarin dansers hun verbeeldingskracht leren inzetten bij het maken van nieuw bewegingsmateriaal. Ik leer ze hun bekende manier van dansen los te laten, te mediteren tot er niets meer overblijft dan een witte ruimte en bij zichzelf na te gaan hoe zij zich willen bewegen in de wereld. Hoe willen zij vorm geven aan de wereld, hoe verhouden zij zich tot de ander en wie willen ze echt zijn? Vanuit deze ideeën creëren de dansers nieuwe wezens die volgens hun eigen regels leven. Wezens met een eigen vorm, geluid, manier van bewegen, communiceren, een eigen gedrag, identiteit, een eigen zijn. De wezens lijken uit een andere wereld te komen, ze zijn absurd, rebels, grappig, en eigenlijk ook heel erg mens.

Vervreemd van de wereld, maar thuis in de ruimte van de verbeelding, wordt in de performance Ja nee maar echt echt een kijkje gegeven in de verbeeldingswereld van de dansers. Of in die van de wezens. Want de wezens zijn misschien wel juist wie de dansers echt echt zijn.

Een surrealistische performance in samenwerking met de dansers, met kostuums van Hans Hutting, geluiden en objecten van Kasper van Moll en een vleugje humor om je te laten lachen om de absurditeit van dat wat wij het leven noemen.”

Elodie volgde gedurende haar studie het Honours Programme, waar ze filosofisch onderzoek heeft gedaan naar de betekenis van authenticiteit binnen de danskunst. Dit theoretisch verdiepende onderzoek heeft een sterke verbintenis met haar werk als dansmaker, waar de vraag naar wanneer iets echt is een belangrijke rol speelt.

Ja nee maar echt echt (translation: yeah, no, but for real for real)

When you feel alienated from the World and the World of the imagination feels more like home than the physical world you live in, then which one is real?

“In my research I’ve been looking for ways to physicaly express to the world of imagination through dance. To realise this, I created a series of lessons in which dancers learn to use their imagination to create new movement material. I teach them to let go of their usual way of moving, to meditate until nothing more remains than a white space, and to reflect on how they wish to move through the world. How do they want to shape the world, how do they relate to others and who do they really want to be? Using these ideas, the dancers create new creatures who live by their own rules. Creatures with their own form, sound, way of moving and communicating, with their own behaviour, identity, with their own way of being. The creatures appear to come from a different world, they are absurd, rebellious, funny, and at the same time very human.

Alienated from the world, while at home in the world of the imagination, the performance Ja nee maar echt echt (Yeah no but for real for real) offers viewers a glimpse of the imagination of the dancers. Or rather that of the creatures. Because perhaps the creatures are the real identity of the dancers.

Elodie also studied at the Honours Programme next to her bachelor education, where she philosophically researched the meaning of ‘authenticity’ within the art of dance. This theoretically in-depht research has a strong connection to her work as a choreographer, where the question when something is real plays an important role.
